Matthew Haislip, horn

Dr. Matthew C. Haislip joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 2016. As Assistant Professor of Horn, he teaches applied horn lessons, chamber music, ear training, and online courses in music appreciation. He also directs the MSU Horn Choir, performs in the Faculty Brass Quintet and Faculty Wind Quintet, and serves as Principal Horn of the Starkville/MSU Symphony. During the summer months, he is a horn instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan. He serves the International Horn Society as the Mississippi Area Representative and the Media Reviews Editor for The Horn Call, the organization’s journal. Prior to coming to Mississippi State, he taught at Washburn University, Calvary University, Hardin-Simmons University, and McMurry University. As a composer, his recent duet book, Dueling Fundamentals for Two Horns, was released in 2019 by Mountain Peak Music and has been praised by leading hornists across the world, including prominent faculty members at Northwestern University and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (UK). 

As a performer, he is a founding member of Quintasonic Brass and he is Third Horn of the North Mississippi Symphony. He previously held the positions of Co-Principal Horn of the Midland-Odessa Symphony (TX), Fourth/Utility Horn of the Missouri Symphony, Principal Horn of the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, and Assistant Principal/Utility Horn of the Kentucky Symphony. As a freelance hornist, he has performed with dozens of professional ensembles, including the Cincinnati Opera, Opera Naples (FL), Omaha Symphony, Huntsville Symphony (AL), Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony, South Dakota Symphony, Meridian Symphony (MS), Lone Star Wind Orchestra (TX), and the Mississippi Symphony. He can be heard on recordings on the Albany Records, Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and Mark Custom labels. He has appeared as a soloist with the Mississippi State University Wind Ensemble, Starkville-MSU Community Band, Angelo State University Wind Ensemble (TX), and the Wills Point High School Band (TX). 

He regularly performs and presents clinics at conferences and at universities across the United States. Recent highlights include appearances at the International Horn Symposium, Southeast Horn Workshop, International Fellowship of Conductors, Composers, and Collaborators, Music by Women Festival, and the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop. Quintasonic Brass recently completed tours that included Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, Western Illinois University, University of Kentucky, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, University of Louisville, Oakland University, University of Louisiana, Monroe, and Kennesaw State University.

Dr. Haislip holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and Texas A&M University-Commerce.
